Cron access

To configure crontab access on appserver, follow these steps:

Step 1: Allow Crontab Access for User james

Ensure the /etc/cron.allow file exists and add the james user to it:

echo "james" | sudo tee -a /etc/cron.allow

This explicitly grants james permission to use crontab.

Step 2: Deny Crontab Access for User garrett

Add garrett to the /etc/cron.deny file:

echo "garrett" | sudo tee -a /etc/cron.deny

This prevents garrett from creating or modifying cron jobs.

Step 3: Verify the Configuration

Check the contents of both files to confirm the changes:

cat /etc/cron.allow
cat /etc/cron.deny

Step 4: Test Access

Try running crontab -e as both users to ensure restrictions are working:

sudo -u james crontab -e # Should work
sudo -u garrett crontab -e # Should be denied

This ensures crontab permissions align with the security policy.
